Are you craving sun, sea, sand, culture, adventure, and just general fun and enjoyment? If you’re anything like me you will be, so I suggest you start doing your research now and start looking for the next place to visit on holiday.
For me, part of the fun of a holiday is actually doing the research as that way you can get a better idea of where to visit and what to do when you get there.
There are a number of gorgeous holiday destinations for you to check out yet the one I’m focussing on in today’s article is one which is often overlooked and underappreciated, and I’m on a mission to change that.
Today, I want to talk to you about Mexico. Now, Mexico had a bad rep in the past, and thankfully that is now changing as people are finally waking up to the fact that it is a stunning vacation destination, providing you find the right places to stay, which is where I come in.
Here are se7en good reasons why you should visit Mexico.
The food
Okay, it’s no secret that I love my grub, and as a foodie, I have to say that Mexican cuisine is up there with the best in terms of deliciousness.
Over here, the “Mexican” food we have access to, and I use the term ‘Mexican’ very loosely indeed, is nothing like the authentic Mexican cuisine you get in Mexico, and when you’re lucky enough to sample it for yourself, you’ll know exactly what I mean.
From tried and tested favourites like fajitas and enchiladas, to lesser-known foods such as empanadas and mole sauce (Pronounced Mo-lay) there’s something to satisfy all manner of taste buds.
Mole sauce, by the way, is not made from Moles so don’t let anybody try to kid you otherwise. It is, in fact, a traditional Mexican sauce/marinade which is made from chillies, onions, garlic, spices, tomatoes, nuts, and even chocolate. It sounds odd, but it tastes absolutely divine.
Ancient Mayan ruins
Another awesome reason to visit Mexico is the fact that the country is home to some of the most amazing ancient ruins you could ever wish for.
As you may or may not know, Mexico was once home to Maya civilisations, and to say that the Mayans were ahead of their time would be a huge understatement.
The Mayans were master creators, and this is evident in the ancient temples scattered around the country.
In fact, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Chichen Itza, is located in Mexico and it really and truly is a sight to behold. The “ruins” which are in surprisingly good condition, are the perfect reflection of when the Mayans were at their peak.
As well as the Wonder, you should also check out places such as Uxmal and Tulum, if you’re a fan of ancient ruins.
The beaches
Forget tropical paradise islands in the Caribbean, and instead, head on over to Mexico if you want the ultimate summer beach holiday in the sun.
Mexico is home to gorgeous coastal resorts, complete with golden white sands, clear blue seas, tropical palm trees, and much more besides.
In actual fact, Mexico is home to more than 6,000 miles of breath-taking coastline so there’s certainly plenty of places to build a sandcastle.
Perhaps at the top of the list is Tulum’s Playa Paraiso, which means Paradise Beach, and wow, is that an appropriate name. This palm-fringed beach is the perfect place to kick back with a good book and a cocktail, before throwing on your snorkel and heading into the water crystal clear waters for a spot of snorkelling.
If you like the coast, you’ll love the beaches in Mexico, it’s as simple as that.
Tequila
If you like your Tequila and Mescal (a close relation to tequila) then, of course, Mexico is the perfect place to visit.
Tequila is growing in popularity, thanks in part to Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson who recently released a new tequila brand known as Teremana and if you’re ever tried tequila before, you’ll understand why people can’t get enough of it.
Tequila is a town located in the highlands of Mexico which is famous for its agave plants used to produce this delicious alcoholic spirit. By law, at least 51% of tequila must come from a form of agave plant known as Tequilana Weber which what grows up in the highlands.
If you visit the area, you can see the plants in the wild, as well as visit the distilleries, buy the wares, and of course, enjoy plenty of samples.
The wrestling
Professional wrestling is big business, and whilst in the US it is a popular form of sports entertainment, in Mexico, wrestling is a part of the culture and is respected nationwide.
In Mexico, wrestlers known as Luchadores will wrestle a style of wrestling known as Lucha Libre which translates into freestyle wrestling.
Luchadores will hide their faces with colourful masks, and whilst each wrestler has his or her own unique style, often you’ll find that the wrestling here is fast-paced and is complete with plenty of acrobatics and unique stunts.
For the ultimate night out in Mexico, be sure to check out a wrestling show as you’ll be blown away by just how much fun it really is.
Copper Canyon
If you enjoy the great outdoors, you’ll love Mexico simply due to the fact that it is home to Copper Canyon.
Mexico has some epic mountain ranges, but Copper Canyon really is something else.
Here you can enjoy stunning views, go ziplining, hiking, walk across old-styled (but safe) suspension bridges, and marvel at the natural beauty on offer here.
The locals
Finally, you’ll struggle to feel more welcome anywhere else in the world, than in Mexico.
Here, the locals are the friendliest, chattiest, most hospitable individuals you could ever be fortunate enough to encounter, and you’ll be made to feel welcome the second you arrive.
Dining out, for example, will be a pleasure as the table service is exceptional as the waiters and bar staff will go out of their way to make you feel welcome and at ease, with no request being too much trouble for them.
You’ll also find that a lot of the locals actually speak English, so there is not a huge language barrier either.
Pack your bags and get ready to have the time of your life in wonderful Mexico. The food, the views, the culture, you’ll sure like it!
Until next time stay safe, stay curious and don’t stop wandering!
